Your opponent is the Stockfish engine, running in your browser.
Select a piece to see its legal moves highlighted.
Chess with the complete rules: castling, en passant, promotion, stalemate, draw by repetition and the fifty-move rule. Win by checkmate.
Moving: click one of your pieces, then one of the highlighted squares (dot = move, red circle = capture). The last move played stays highlighted in yellow; a king in check glows red.
Promotion: when a pawn reaches the last rank you choose the piece (Queen, Rook, Bishop or Knight).
↶ Undo: takes the game back to before your last move, also retracting the computer's reply (also Ctrl+Z).
💡 Hint: the engine at full strength shows you the move it would play.
Your opponent is Stockfish, one of the strongest chess engines in the world. Its strength is set from 0 to 20 with the slider on the start screen (the Easy/Medium/Hard buttons equal 0, 8 and 20): at level 0 it makes deliberate mistakes for beginners, at 20 it plays at full strength.
The game is saved automatically at the start of each of your turns: if you close the page you can resume where you left off.
