Comprehensive Guide to Luciano Mahjong (Shanghai)
Luciano Mahjong (also widely known as Shanghai Mahjong) is one of the world's most beloved puzzle and tile-matching games. The objective is to clear all 144 tiles from the board by finding matching pairs of open/free tiles.
My first encounter with Mahjong took place during my numerous business trips to China in the 1980s and 1990s, when the streets of Shanghai were crowded with bicycles as shown in the photograph I took back then. 1. When is a Tile "Free" (Playable)?

5. Winning Strategies
- Clear the highest peaks first: Tiles on top layers block access to multiple layers below; prioritize them whenever pairs are available.
- Unlock long horizontal rows: Tiles trapped in the center of long rows can only be reached once the outer ends are removed.
- Take advantage of 4-of-a-kind: When all 4 identical tiles are free simultaneously, match them immediately without risk.
