Comprehensive Guide to Luciano Mahjong (Shanghai)
Luciano Mahjong (also widely known as Shanghai Mahjong) is one of the world's most beloved puzzle and tile-matching games. The objective is to clear all 144 tiles from the board by finding matching pairs of open/free tiles.
My first encounter with Mahjong took place during my numerous business trips to China in the 1980s and 1990s, when the streets of Shanghai were crowded with bicycles as shown in the photograph I took back then. On one of those trips, I purchased as a souvenir a beautiful handcrafted game set, with traditional tiles stored in their original carrying case.
1. When is a Tile "Free" (Playable)?
The board starts with 144 tiles arranged in multi-level 3D structures. A tile is considered free and selectable if and only if it satisfies both criteria:
- No tile on top: No other tile covers any portion of its surface at a higher layer.
- At least one open side: Its left or right side must be completely unobstructed by adjacent tiles at the same level.

Luciano Mahjong features the iconic, time-honored Shanghai Turtle configuration, built with 144 tiles arranged across 5 tiered vertical layers to form a majestic stepped pyramid.

To provide immediate visual clarity and layer depth without eye strain, each elevated tier is framed by a distinctive colored perimeter line along its exposed outer step:
- Layer 0 (Table Base): 87 tiles resting flat on the table, featuring natural ivory edges.
- Layer 1 (1st Step): Central 6×6 block (36 tiles), outlined by a high-contrast Emerald Green border.
- Layer 2 (2nd Step): Middle 4×4 block (16 tiles), outlined by a crisp Sapphire Blue border.
- Layer 3 (3rd Step): Upper 2×2 block (4 tiles), outlined by a vivid Ruby / Magenta border.
- Layer 4 (Peak): The single tile crowning the pyramid summit, encircled by an Imperial Gold border.

5. Winning Strategies
- Clear the highest peaks first: Tiles on top layers block access to multiple layers below; prioritize them whenever pairs are available.
- Unlock long horizontal rows: Tiles trapped in the center of long rows can only be reached once the outer ends are removed.
- Take advantage of 4-of-a-kind: When all 4 identical tiles are free simultaneously, match them immediately without risk.
- Use Hints & Undo: When in doubt, tap 💡 Hint or ↩️ Undo. If no moves remain, 🔀 Shuffle reorganizes the remaining tiles while keeping your progress intact.
